EARLY SEASON

The Early season begins in June and is an 8 week season.  This season consists of seasonal fruits and vegetables.  We occassionally have items such as honey, granola and eggs.

Large Share Example: Choice of fruit (ie. strawberries, blueberries, cherries, peaches), 3 lbs vegetables, you-pick, (ie. tomatoes, squash/zucchini, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, sweet peppers, etc.), 4 bunched items, you-pick (ie. asparagus, carrots, chard, arugula, lettuce, spinach, beets)

Small Share Example: Choice of fruit (same choices as family share but half the portion), choice of 3lbs of vegetables or 2 bunched items (asparagus, carrots, chard, arugula, lettuce, spinach, beets), 2 additional bunched items.

MID SEASON

The Mid season begins in July and is an 8 week season.  This season consists of seasonal fruits and vegetables.  We occassionally have items such as honey, granola and eggs.

 PRE-SEASON SHARE

 The pre-season share is a 4 week season in May, separate from the regular season.  It consists of fruit (strawberries), vegetables (asparagus, lettuces, greens, roots vegetables, etc.), eggs, and plants (potted herbs&  vegetables). The plants and produce change weekly.

 Each member who signs up for the pre-season share will get eggs, plants and produce.  The reason we include the plants and eggs for all shares is because the growing season is just beginning and produce is limited.  For this reason there are limited spaces as well.

Four (4) week season not included in our regular 24 week season (Early, Mid, Late).

There will be no make up shares for this shorter season.

EGG SHARE

Norman's offers locally raised eggs as part of our CSA shares.  This is an additional cost from our produce shares.  The eggs are all sustainably raised in Maryland at small farms.  They are pastured eggs where all the chickens roam the farm and are fed an all natural diet.  Norman's offers egg shares for the same length as the produce seasons (Early, Mid and Late Seasons).

John Norman, co-founder of Norman's Farm Market.  John is NFM's artistic director, story writer, musician, retail manager, and bookkeeper.

Jeff Norman, co-founder of NFM.  Jeff is head of our farm, growing practices and our network to local farmers.  We call him the "produce guy".  Jeff is married with two children.

Eris Norman joined forces with John and Jeff in the summer of 2001, where she ran two roadside stands alongside John.  John and Eris married two years later and have two young children, Jocelyn and Dylan.  She is currently in school to be a certified Health Coach.

The History of Norman's Farm Market...

In 1987, the Norman brothers began what has amassed to a career in selling local fruits and vegetables along the roadsides of Montgomery County, Maryland.

The idea had been given to them by their uncle, Robert Kay, who twenty years earlier had operated his own stand out of the trunk of his car in Potomac. Steve Norman, the eldest Norman brother, home from his freshman year of college thought this a grand idea for a summer job and enlisted the efforts of his brothers, John & Jeff.

Throughout the 1990’s, along with a small army of talented high school and college students seeking summer jobs, and a fleet of a few of the ugliest used pick-up trucks ever assembled, the Norman brothers opened and operated as many as ten roadside markets in a single season.  This endeavor was named Norman's Farm Markets.

Over the next decade Norman's Farm Markets continued to forge relationships with many local farmers, customers, and food enthusiasts. They opened a gourmet market in Bethesda; a garden center and country store in Reston, Virginia, and farm markets in Potomac and Olney.

In 2006, Norman's Farm Market began their own farm in Woodbine, Maryland. This small 5 acre farm serves as an opportunity to experiment with growing unique varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers; to experiment with  sustainable techniques of farming, and to develop new trends. Also it serves as a central produce depot for other farmers that grow for our members and customers.

The current state of Norman’s Farm Market is a streamlined family owned and operated farm business running two roadside stands in Chevy Chase and Bethesda as well as a rapidly growing CSA, (community supported agriculture) Program. In 2001 John Norman met his wife, Eris, who along with Jeff Norman are the owners of Norman’s Farm Market. We are dedicated to championing the cause of the local foods movement and supporting local farmers.

In addition to offering some of the best local foods in the area, Norman's Farm Market also provides some of the best seasonal jobs.  Our busy season coincides with summer vacation for many students and provides a great opportunity for learning about farms, business, and marketing.  Our employees enjoy working outdoors in a team environment helping customers and marketing healthy foods.  It is fun and active work ideal for people with energetic, creative, and hardworking personalities. 

We hire for positions available from June through November.  These positions include roadside market workers, cashiers, and drivers.  Some of the requirements necessary are as follows:    

Roadside Market & CSA customer service-

Must be fluent in English, Good Customer Service and Good work ethic, Don't mind working in heat or rain, Must be able to lift heavy produce boxes, Must be able to work in a team environment.

Truck Driver and Delivery-

Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.  Must be able to lift heavy produce boxes.

Every morning we arrive at the stands with a truck full of produce from the areas premier farmers.  All our produce is sustainably grown, super fresh and 100% Local.  To find out more about the farms click here!

When it comes to quality and selection, our roadside stands have been compared to the best area farmers markets.  Plus they are open everyday from morning until evening. Currently Norman’s operates two daily roadside stands, one in Chevy Chase and one in Bethesda.  So don’t miss the chance to shop at one of our roadside stands and “Honk your Horn for Corn!”

1. Registration, Discounts, and Billing.  Payment must be received within 30 days of registration to avoid cancellation.  To receive the FREE WEEK discount members must sign up for 24-week season and payment must be received within 30 days of registration and before the start of the Early Season.  You may sign up for one season at a time as long as space is available.  Payment must be in full because Norman's commits to local farmers for your membership. 
2. Refunds.  Once the season has begun (in the Spring) no refunds will be issued.  This is because our farmers are depending upon us to purchase the fruits & vegetables which we have contracted them to grow based on our member registration.  If you register once our season has begun for the year, there are no refunds issued.
3. Make-up Policy for missed shares.  Norman's offers our members a make-up policy as a courtesy, and reserves the right to deny a make-up based upon availability of product.  THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS ALLOWED FOR PRE-SEASON SHARES.  Norman's will allow 1 (one) make-up share per 8-week season (Early, Mid, Late), this may be done by doubling a share one week or obtaining a voucher (gift certificate) that may be used at the CSA pickup or our roadside markets.  Missed shares must be made up within the 8-week season (Early, Mid or Late) missed (weather and produce permitting).  The best way to make-up a share for us is to have a friend pickup for you.  The voucher may be issued in advance of the missed week, however are only given at CSA pickups.  The voucher will equal the value of the missed share ($17.50 small/ $25 large).  Vouchers are transferrable, however lost vouchers will NOT be replaced.  Makeups are a courtesy by NFM, and we reserve the right not to honor makeups due to crop failure or lack of produce without refund. 
4. Inclement Weather.  CSA pickups will be held rain or shine, however in the event of hazardous weather conditions Norman’s will notify members of pickup cancellation via email notification.  If a pickup is cancelled, members will be issued a CSA voucher.  The voucher will equal the value of the missed share ($17.50 small/ $25 large).  Voucher may be used at CSA pickups or our roadside markets.
5. Designated Pickup Location.  All shares must be picked up at the location selected by member at registration or made up at the roadside markets during business hours.  You can only come to the roadside market on the week you miss your share.
6. Share of the Harvest.  Our shares are designed to divide the harvest fairly among our members.  Small member shares are about 3/5 the size of large shares.  Shares are measured in a series of steps consisting of pints, quarts, bunches, ¼ pecks, and ½ pecks.  Members are expected to honor the designated portions and not overfill.  Members that overfill will be asked to put back produce.  Overfilling diminishes other member’s shares and jeopardizes the system of the CSA.  Members which intentionally overfill or take advantage of the system will have their membership suspended without refund.  Portions and sizes of shares are subject to change throughout season based on availability and supply of product.
7. Donations. Norman’s donates or composts ALL missed shares on a weekly basis due to their perishable nature.  Our commitment to farmers is made prior to the growing season and does not take into account our member’s weekly plans or personal conflicts.  We ask that our members honor their commitment to participate in our CSA program and accept that any missed shares or unused vouchers will not be credited back to the member at the end of the season.
8. Crop Failure.  CSA members share in the risks as well as the benefits of the growing season.  Risks in farming include pests, drought, excessive rain, wind, and crop failure.  In case of shortage in supply Norman's will distribute available product fairly amongst its members and if necessary reserves the right to discontinue make-up shares.

Selection.  Perhaps what sets Norman’s CSA shares apart from other CSA’s is the selection we offer to our members.  By having such an expansive selection of product it is impossible to fit everything into our shares.  We remedy this by allowing our members to choose.  Perhaps the toughest challenge our members face is with so much to choose from, what to pick?

Our CSA Program allows us to custom plan the growing season around our member’s tastes.  With our farmer’s experience in growing and Norman’s twenty plus years of experience selling local produce at our roadside stands, we work together to achieve an amazing selection of product for the season.

Quality.  Our Pickup Schedule dictates when crops should be harvested and brought to our members.  This helps us guarantee only the highest and freshest quality in our shares.  By knowing specifically how much to bring to a location and unpacking as needed, it is the closest thing to having your own backyard garden, but without the all the work.
